Could you please introduce yourself and share a bit about your background and what drew you to the biotechnology field?
My name is Yaron Silberberg, and I am the Director of the Customer Solution Center (CSC) at Ajinomoto CELLiST Korea Co., Inc. Ever since I can remember, I've been fascinated by how things work, especially at the microscopic level. My interest in biology was fueled by a deep curiosity about the molecular and cellular mechanisms that govern life. In addition to that, I’ve always enjoyed connecting with people, which has driven me to bridge gaps between different cultures and disciplines, such as academia and industry. This passion for cross-fertilization of ideas and experiences is what led me to the field of biotechnology. It’s an exciting journey where the intersection of science and human interaction creates powerful innovations.
Experience at ACK:
As the Chief Scientist and Director of the Customer Solution Center, what have been some of your most significant experiences and achievements since joining Ajinomoto CELLiST Korea?
Since joining Ajinomoto CELLiST Korea, one of my most significant experiences has been leading the establishment and growth of our Customer Solution Centers (CSCs) in Korea and China, and our most recent one in India. These centers have been pivotal in providing tailored support to our biopharmaceutical clients, ensuring they receive not only high-quality cell culture media but also customized solutions for their specific needs. A notable achievement has been our successful collaborations with top-tier biopharma companies, which have resulted in enhanced product performance and customer satisfaction. Additionally, the development and implementation of our media screening and process optimization services have significantly improved our clients' bioprocess efficiencies, contributing to their overall success.
Innovations and Research:
Can you discuss some recent innovations or projects your team at the Customer Solution Center has been working on? What makes these projects particularly exciting or impactful?
We are incredibly fortunate to be directly connected to Ajinomoto's large research hub in Japan, which greatly enhances our ability to troubleshoot customer issues and drive innovation. Recently, our teams both in Japan and Korea, have been working on several innovative projects that leverage cutting-edge technologies to enhance cell culture media performance. One such project involves the integration of multi-omics and Digital Twin technologies, developed in collaboration with A*STAR's Bioprocess Technology Institute (BTI), to optimize our new CELLiST media and feed formulations. This project has not only improved cell growth and productivity but also reduced accumulation of toxic by-products, which are a common challenge in cell culture. These innovations are particularly impactful as they directly address critical challenges faced by our clients, enhancing their bioproduction processes and product quality.
Leadership in a Multi-Cultural Environment:
Leading research teams in a multi-cultural environment can be challenging. How do you approach managing and motivating a diverse team?
Managing diverse, multi-cultural team requires a deep understanding and appreciation of different perspectives and cultural backgrounds. I prioritize open communication and foster an inclusive environment where every team member feels valued and heard. Regular team meetings and one-on-one interactions help me stay connected with the various teams, understand their challenges, and provide the necessary support. I also emphasize the importance of collaboration and respect, encouraging team members to share their ideas and learn from each other. By recognizing and celebrating the unique contributions of each individual, we create a cohesive and motivated team that works towards common goals.
Work-Life Balance:
With a demanding role like yours, how do you maintain a healthy work-life balance? What hobbies or activities do you enjoy in your free time?
Balancing a demanding job with personal life can be challenging, but I find joy in combining my interests. My passion both for photography and for people, allows me to explore new places with my camera, capturing moments of human behavior. This hobby not only helps me unwind but also connects me with people from different walks of life, enriching my perspective. One fundamental lesson I learned early on, which has always helped me deal with new situations and new people, is to look at 'obstacles' as exciting 'adventures'. This mindset has helped me enjoy being outside my 'comfort zone' and navigate new environments, such as a different country or a unique organizational culture. My experiences in the UK, Japan, Singapore, and Korea have all enriched my ability to connect with diverse groups of people, which helped me both in my career as well as my personal life.
Future Vision:
Looking ahead, what are your goals and vision for the Customer Solution Center? How do you plan to drive innovation and ensure customer satisfaction in the coming years?
My vision for the Customer Solution Center is to continue being a leader in providing innovative and customized solutions for biopharmaceutical companies worldwide. In the coming years, we aim to expand our CSC network to more regions, enhance our technological capabilities, and deepen our collaborations with industry and academia. By leveraging advanced technologies such as AI and ML, we plan to develop next-generation cell culture media that meet the evolving needs of our clients.
I feel incredibly lucky to be working alongside a fantastic team of motivated and creative scientists. Their proficiency and enthusiasm are key to providing quick, professional and effective responses to our customers' most challenging queries. Our ultimate goal is to empower our clients to achieve their bioproduction objectives efficiently and effectively, driving overall industry advancement.
